The mechanism for the protection of copyright in Europe is based on the harmonised EU legal framework, which combines a high level of protection for rights holders with adaptation to the digital environment and a balance between the interests of users and innovation. Copyright grants authors exclusive rights to use their original works, including their reproduction, distribution and communication. Copyright is granted automatically. Although there is no single EU copyright, creators enjoy protection under the national laws of the 27 EU Member States and beyond. EU copyright law consists of 13 directives and 2 regulations that harmonise the fundamental rights of authors, performers and others. By setting harmonised standards, EU copyright law reduces national differences and ensures the level of protection necessary to stimulate creativity and investment in creative works. Harmonised standards promote cultural diversity and improve access to digital content and services for consumers and businesses across Europe. The main European standards are established through a series of directives and regulations, with the key current document being Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market (DSM Directive). European Union copyright legislation is designed to harmonise fundamental rights and establish common standards across Member States. This provides a level of protection that encourages creativity and investment, whilst supporting cultural diversity and better access to digital content and services across Europe. EU copyright law comprises directives and regulations covering various aspects of copyright protection, such as the duration of protection, economic rights and moral rights. The law also contains provisions on the enforcement and enforcement of copyright, as well as exceptions and limitations to protect the rights of creators and consumers.
